Tutorial: Father’s Day Pen Holder with Floam.

Father’s Day is coming up quickly and the kids wanted to do something special for Tom.  They’ve been dying to play with this Nickelodeon Floam that we got in the mail the other week, so today we got all of the supplies out and made this colorful pen holder for Tom to use in his office at work.  I’m not sure if you’re familiar with Floam, but it’s a ton of fun.  It’s an incredible, reusable molding compound that can be used to cover objects (like we did for this project) or molded into shapes.  You can even use cookie cutters with it.  The cool thing about it is that it doesn’t stick to your hands, when prepped properly, and can be used multiple times or can be left to dry and harden overnight.  Here’s how to make the #1 DAD pen holder.

What you’ll need:

  • 1.5 liter plastic bottle
  • tape
  • at least three colors of floam
  • child safe scissors
We were sent an example of the pen holder to follow (shown below),
but we customized ours a bit.
The instructions call for a plastic bottle, cut about 4.5″ tall, with tape around the top edge to protect it.
We didn’t have a bottle that size, but we have an abundance of mason jars, so we used one of those!
It’s important to prep the floam by folding and flattening it until it is evenly mixed and flexible.
This was easy enough that Levi could do it himself.
We chose blue Floam to cover the jar.  We prepped it and then rolled it out into a rectangle.

We wrapped the Floam rectangle around the mason jar, pinching the top edges together around the lip of the jar.  There were a few areas that became too thin, but we easily patched them up with little bits of extra Floam.  Any extra we trimmed off with scissors.  Then we rolled out a thin strip of Floam and used it to cover the top rim of the bottle.
We rolled and flattened more Floam to create letter and numbers to decorate the pen holder.
The kids (especially Abby) had fun with this part.

The last step is to let it dry overnight and try to keep it under wraps until Father’s Day!
Happy Father’s Day!
You can find Floam at Toy’s R Us, Target, Walgreens, and Bed, Bath, and Beyond!  You can also find Floam on Facebook and Twitter.
