One of my biggest goals as a crafter is to create as much as I can from the materials I already have. And easy eco-friendly crafts are even better. I’ve had a few second-hand burlap bags in my stash for a while now, so I’m excited to be using them for my burlap bowl tutorial today! These bowls are perfect for fall decor and can be used year-round. Read on to see how easy it is to make your own.
Gather your supplies:
- A bowl (any size will do)
- Burlap (enough that it will leave several inches hanging over your original bowl)
- Plastic wrap
- Matte finished Mod Podge
- Craft glue (I used some quick drying glue)
- Scissors
- A paint brush
Begin by covering the bottom of your bowl with plastic wrap (this will make it easier to remove the burlap when you’re finished). Lay your first piece of burlap so it covers just over half of the bowl (if you have a piece large enough just center it over the bowl). Begin brushing on the Mod Podge starting at the top of the bowl and then onto the side.
To turn your square of burlap into a bowl, create evenly spaced pleats and glue them down, pressing firmly to help them stick.
Once you’ve finished one piece of burlap, add some glue and overlap the second piece. Continue pleating, and cover the entire bowl with Mod Podge, adding a second layer. Now, here comes the hard part, waiting for your bowl to dry. You’ll probably need to let it sit overnight.
Once dry, remove the burlap from the bowl and peel off the plastic wrap. You may have a slight glaze on the inside from the Mod Podge, but don’t peel it off, it’s holding the bowl together. Lastly, take your scissors and trim around the edge of the bowl, and there you go!
I hope you’re inspired to make your own burlap bowl! I’d love to see how yours turns out. Drop by and visit me at Maker Mama, and check out my collection of tutorials. See you again here at The Southern Institute next month!
