Yes, fall is here and the temps are a bit cooler, which can only mean one thing…
It’s time for cardigans!!!
Admittedly, it’s still in the 80′s here most days for now, but the nights and mornings are much cooler than that, and a light cardigan is the perfect layering piece for that kind of weather. So last week I made Abby the Greenpoint Cardigan from Hey June. It’s in the current Sew Fab Pattern Bundle and it’s FABULOUS!
I was so excited that this pattern comes in Abby’s size, from 12 months to 12 years. She’s growing so fast and quickly getting to that age where she is growing out of most of the children’s pattern sizes. So sad! She is in need of sweaters for the fall and this seemed like the perfect fit. Now, according to the size chart and her measurements, I should have made her a couple sizes smaller than she normally wears, which didn’t surprise me. My Ananda Pants pattern is sized on the large side according to standard children’s sizes too. I cut out the size that the chart said I should (6) but it seemed small to me so I made a size up. I’m really glad that I did, and actually wish that I had gone ahead and made the size 10 for her, because the size 8 just barely fits her. There’s not any room for growth, which is kind of a bummer, but it’s super cute and I love it. Better yet, she LOVES it. She wears it all of the time, I am not exaggerating.
I found the sweater knit fabric at Joanns in the clearance section for $7/yard. It’s super light (almost sheer) and has a wonderful drape to it, which makes it just perfect for this time of the year in Nashville. We decided not to put buttons on it and let it hang open, at least for now. Why, you may ask? Mostly because I was short one button, ha ha ha.
I was a little bit nervous about this pattern. First of all, I had never sewn a cardigan before. Second of all, I had never sewn with sweater knit before and that scared me. As soon as I started sewing all of that nervousness flew out the window! This was the easiest sweater to come together. The knit material sewed like butter and the pattern was a cinch to follow. The instructions are well written and the whole thing comes together quickly and easily, producing a great looking piece of clothing that looks like you bought it at the store!
Another great thing about this pattern is that it’s unisex! I have some navy blue sweater knit ready to be made into a sweater for Levi. I can’t wait!
And the kicker is that you can get The Greenpoint Cardigan in the Sew Fab Bundle right now for just a little over $1!!!
