Celestial Pullover! Let’s talk sewing patterns for tweens and teens. In the past it has been so easy to sew for Abby because she has fit into the majority of girls’ sewing patterns that are out there. But she’s growing like a weed. I’ve tried to stop her, but I’m failing miserably. She is almost 11 years old and she’s five feet tall, wearing a size 10 sometimes, but needing the length of a 12, and sometimes just wearing a straight 12 (in pants particularly). She’s sizing out of children’s patterns but too small for women’s. Thanks goodness for designers like Shelly and Figgy’s Patterns!!! Her latest collection of sewing patterns, the Heavenly Collection includes patterns for tweens-adults! Wahoo!
Abby is at the age where she definitely has ideas about what she likes, and she likes the Celestial Pullover. Being that she is a girl of strong opinions, when we pick a pattern for her I always let her have the majority say in the fabric choice. For this shirt she wanted this solid coral colored knit. Personally I found it a bit boring and tried to steer her toward something with texture, but she was decided on this, so I suggested we customize it with something. Silver hearts were the winners, created with a homemade heart stencil and metallic fabric paint. We love it!
Shelly’s patterns are wonderful because they are super stylish and beautifully straightforward in their construction. This shirt was a cinch to sew up! I say that not as a beginner, but having been a beginner at one point I easily could have completed this project… and I would have been pretty darn proud of myself.
Abby loves the pockets. She is her mother’s daughter. I love pockets too, and I love the style of this on her. When you have a tween and you are trying to shop for her in the big shops at the mall it’s hard to find things that are modest, not belly-baring, not to much back-exposure, you know what I mean. That’s why I love sewing for Abby. I have complete control, bwahahah! And just as a side note, I’ll be trying this Celestial Pullover in an XL for myself.
I think one of the most important markers of a successful pattern is the smile on the wearer’s face. So the proof is in the pudding, as they say. And can I just brag on Shelly for a moment? She is honestly one of the kindest, most generous and encouraging designers that I have ever had the pleasure of working with. She took a chance on me and my first Sew Fab sale and has enthusiastically participated ever since. She is a mentor to me and is always there when I have questions about pattern design. As a new pattern designer that means the world to me. Thank you, Shelly!
